What can a 5kVA inverter power?

Start with the ceiling: 5,000 watts, at once
A 5kVA inverter's job is to deliver up to roughly 5,000 watts of continuous power at any given moment (the exact usable wattage is slightly below the kVA figure once power factor is accounted for, but 5,000W is a safe planning number for household appliances). That's a ceiling on what can run simultaneously — not a limit on how much you can use across a whole day, which is instead governed by your battery's kWh capacity.
A realistic household load, added up

What it can't comfortably do
A 5kVA inverter starts to struggle when several high-draw items run at once:
- Two or more 1.5HP+ AC units simultaneously, especially at start-up
- A microwave, kettle, iron and pressure washer all running together
- Industrial or workshop equipment with large motors
This is where sizing matters — households with heavier simultaneous loads are usually better served by an 8kVA or 10kVA inverter rather than pushing a 5kVA unit to its limit daily, which shortens its working life.
Why motor start-up catches people out
Appliances with a compressor or motor — fridges, freezers, AC units, pumps, washing machines — pull a short burst of extra power the instant they switch on, often 2–3 times their running wattage. A fridge that runs at 150W might briefly demand 400–450W at start-up.
